Fernanda Batista tells about project meeting: The second project meeting was held at our school, Agrupamento de Escolas Serra da Gardunha, from the 16th to 20th April, 2012. You might be wondering where this school is. Well, it is in a small town called Fundão, in the inner centre of Portugal.
Our partners from the different countries (Estonia, Slovenia, Belgium, and Poland) arrived on Monday, 16th April. Everyone was so very excited about meeting the project partners especially the students. They asked so many questions and they were really anxious to meet them all.
Sara and Francisco, 15 year old students (9th Grade), who were going to host two students from Estonia were so excited to meet their mates. Their first contact was by e-mail, they actually had never seen each other before and knew very little about each other. They simply had exchanged several e-mails and that was about all. It was amazing the moment they saw each other for the first time, that was on Monday, 16th April at dinner, they started talking as if they had know each other their whole life. After dinner they guided their Estonian mates through the town, showing them all the important parts of the town. It was surprising to see them communicate with each other in English, almost like natives speakers. We teachers were so proud of them. Markus and Marian were always surrounded by students, they went to classes altogether, they went out together and they did several activities together. It was a very enriching experience for all the students.
On Tuesday morning, 17th April, our partners were welcomed by a short concert where some of our students who are learning music did a lovely performance. They played violin, piano, accordion and saxophone. There was also a short talk about Portugal and some of its famous people (actors, singers, sports people, historians…).
Tiina Erala, the coordinator of the project, was invited to attend a school inspection presentation which was done by the school headmistress, Ms Cândida Brito. Of course, I must tell you that we had inspection during the same week as our Comenius Project.
Later in the morning our partners visited one of our kindergartens (Porta Aberta) and one of our primary schools (Nossa Senhora da Conceição) where they played some of their traditional games and the Portuguese pupils were delighted to play them. They just didn’t want to stop. They begged for more and said “Just one more!”. Some of them learnt to greet and say their names in Estonian. The students were so proud of themselves.
In the afternoon the partners got together for the project meeting where each partner showed some of their traditional games, we played them and then we exchanged our games. We talked about the project and all the things that had been done and the things which needed to be done.
Later in the afternoon we went to the Town Council were we meet the town-councillor who is responsible for education, Ms Alcina Cerdeira. We had a short meeting.
The following day each partner had two tasks to do, do a short presentation about their country to the older students and play two or three traditional games with the younger students (primary and middle school). The older students were enthusiastic to learn more about the different European countries which are part of this project. Once again the younger students really enjoyed themselves when they played the games. They were fascinated with the games and they seemed never to be tried. It was great fun even for the teachers. The older students also did a short presentation about Portugal and its traditions (food, music, monuments…). Everyone was able to practice their English and to learn more about each partner’s country and traditions.
In the afternoon our partners went sightseeing. They were able to learn a bit more about Portugal, especially about our region. They were able to see the lovely castles of Belmonte and Sortilha, see the lovely landscape, taste traditional food and meet some local people.
On Thursday, 19th April, our partners carried out their two tasks, mentioned above, with other classes, which was a success and enriching. Everyone (teachers, students and school helpers) was happy to learn more about each partner’s country.
In the afternoon there was a workshop were each teacher from the different countries had to make their own Portuguese traditional toy. That was great! To see all the teachers busy working hard on their toy, using all sort of materials, tools and machines. They made a soap playing car using recycling materials as this is one of the aims of our project, recycling material.
Friday, 20th April, was the sad moment when we had to end our Project week. We had to say good-bye.
During this week it was wonderful to have our partners with us. We exchanged our traditional games, knowledge about each other’s country/culture and about each other’s educational system. We realized that some of the traditional games are the same in each country, except with some small variations like the rhyme, the lyrics of the song, etc. but on the whole they are all the same. The different Portuguese teachers posted in their school blog photos and talked about the Comenius week.
School Project Day
On 20th July our school, Agrupamento de Escolas Serra da Gardunha, had an open Project Day where all the coordinators of the different school projects did a short presentation about their project and what had been done. The coordinator of our Comenius project, Let’s play together like grandpa!, talked about the project, showed the different games that were brought by the different partners when they came to our school in April (16th to 20th April) and talked about the project’s website. Some of the teachers who are working on the project talked about their experience and a mother of one of our students that hosted the Estonian students, when they came to Fundão - Portugal, also talked about her son’s experience and how enriching and wonderful it was to have an Estonia student at home.

Traditional games in Porta Alberta kindergarten
The 27th April was a very special day for Porta Aberta kindergarten. Parents, grandparents and other family members came in to spend a lovely afternoon full of traditional games. Pupils, between the ages five and six, presented a set of flags and games from the different European countries that are part of the project “Let’s play together like grandfather” - Lifelong Learning Programme – Comenius 1. The games were from Estonia, Belgium, Poland, Slovenia and Portugal.
After the short presentation pupils asked their family members to play the different games. That was great fun! Everyone was enthusiastic to play. Everyone listened very carefully to all the instructions and rules. It was time to play!!! “Run! Quick! Stop! Over here! Over there! Great! Well done! You can do it! Keep it up! …”.
Everyone played and enjoyed themselves. It was lovely to see young children with family members playing different games, helping each other or playing against each other. It was wonderful! The young children were very proud and happy to be playing with their own family and with other families. Parents, grandparents and other family members were delighted to see their siblings running about and knowing so much about other countries in Europe and even foreign games.
The project enables two or more generations to come together, recall and learn traditional games and realize that most of the games are similar in several European countries. All generations can enjoy themselves and have fun with these interesting games and there is no need of technologies.
